NIVA’s State of Live Report Reveals the Economic Impact of Minneapolis’ Independent Stages
New Data Highlights Minneapolis’ Stages $2.2 Billion Impact on Economy and Important Role in Supporting Tourism and Jobs
July 30, 2026 – Today, the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), the Minnesota Independent Venue Alliance (MNIVA), and the Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs Department (ACA) unveil the economic impact findings from the regional State of Live report for Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Minneapolis report builds on NIVA’s National State of Live Economic Research Study and details the regional economic impact and situation of independent live entertainment venues, festivals, and promoters across Minneapolis.
Minneapolis’ independent live entertainment sector serves as both a cultural anchor and a major economic driver, producing $134.6 million annually in off-site spending that supports Minneapolis and Twin Cities’ hotels, restaurants, retail, and public transportation. Despite this economic impact, only 20% of independent stages in Minneapolis reported profitability, highlighting the growing gap between cultural value and financial sustainability for these small businesses.
According to the State of Live report, annually, independent stages in Minneapolis:
Generate $2.2 billion in total economic output
Contribute $1.2 billion directly to Minneapolis' GDP
Pay $743.9 million in wages and benefits
Return $114.2 million in annual state and local taxes
Generate $134.6 million in off-site tourism spending
Support 15,118 industry jobs and directly employ 7,283 individuals
What distinguishes Minneapolis from many other cities is that its reputation is rooted in innovation rather than scale. Despite having a much smaller population than cities like Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago, Minneapolis has repeatedly generated musical movements that have reshaped popular music nationally and internationally. From Bob Dylan's early folk roots to Prince's Minneapolis Sound, from the alternative rock revolution led by Hüsker Dü and The Replacements to today's vibrant independent music ecosystem, the city has consistently produced artists and institutions whose influence extends far beyond Minnesota. This sustained history of artistic innovation, combined with an enduring network of independent venues, recording studios, festivals, and community support, is why Minneapolis is widely recognized as one of America's most important music cities.
Nationally, the State of Live report, released earlier this year, found that independent stages across the country generated $153.1 billion in economic output, and contributed $86.2 billion directly to U.S. GDP, supported more than 907,000 jobs, and paid over $51.7 billion in wages and benefits — eclipsing the U.S. beer, gaming, and airline industries.
“The independent stages of Minneapolis are a source of joy, escape, and resilience for the people who live, work, and play here,” said Stephen Parker, Executive Director of the National Independent Venue Association. “Now we know how critical these stages - and the artists that make magic on them - are to the Minneapolis economy. They should be prioritized, nurtured, and made a central part of the City’s community and economic development strategies.”

This report is a critical step toward ensuring these independent businesses have a stronger voice in shaping Minneapolis' economic future."

The release of the Minneapolis State of Live report comes on the heels of NIVA's 2026 conference in Minneapolis, where independent venue owners, promoters, festivals, artists, policymakers, and industry leaders from across North America gathered to celebrate and strengthen independent live entertainment. The conference showcased firsthand what this research confirms: Minneapolis' independent stages are not only globally influential cultural institutions, but also vital economic drivers that deserve continued investment and support.
Conducted by leading economic research firm TEConomy Partners, the Minneapolis State of Live report provides policymakers, community leaders, and industry stakeholders with clear, data-driven evidence of the economic and cultural value of independent live entertainment in Minneapolis. The findings underscore why independent stages, promoters, and live entertainment leaders must continue to have a seat at decision-making tables across Minnesota when shaping economic development, tourism, and cultural policy.
